The Solheim Cup is coming to Gleneagles
The news that Gleneagles has been awarded the 2019 Solheim Cup has come in just as I'm about to send out this week's newsletter. This is fantastic news for Perthshire and Scottish golf and even more specifically, for the growth of ladies golf.
At present, lady golfers make up just 15% of the total number of golf club members in Scotland and this is something that we are very keen to grow and improve. With the world's largest ladies golf event being played on our doorstep in just 4 years time, this gives us a fantastic opportunity to grow and develop ladies golf. For more information, click here.
So you want to improve your golf this winter…
It's the time of year when you start to reflect on the season and take stock of where your game has been and how you can improve it over the winter months in preparation for 2016. This week I'm going to start by talking about how to identify your weaknesses.
How should I do this?
The key to successfully taking stock of your game is to be brutally honest with yourself about it. This is a self-assessment, so there is no need to fool yourself into believing things are better than they really are. If you use a statistics system like www.LowerYourScores.com then you should login and look through your performance data as this will identify where you should be spending your practice time.
If you don't use statistics, then I would suggest that this is something you start doing for 2016.
For now, I'll presume that you don't track your stats and we will look at how to analyse your game without this assistance. Without stats, the process is going to need a bit of thought, so let's start with your last round of golf. Try to go through it shot by shot in your head and take down some notes about where you lost shots and the consequences of any bad shots that you hit. Unfortunately with golf, one bad shot can lead to subsequent difficulties, but it's important to be able to identify the initial error.
Try repeating this exercise with at least 6 more rounds, and although you will be unlikely to remember every shot that you hit, you should be able to form a pattern of the errors and weaknesses in your game. Once you have gone through a few rounds, you should start to see a pattern of your weaknesses appear and although it won't be very precise, it will give you the information required to start your improvement.
Next week, we'll start to look at how you are going to work on the identified weaknesses.

Play Better Golf - It's Rough out there
Playing golf from a nicely cut fairway is difficult enough, but what about when your ball is lying in deep rough? As we come into the back end of the golf season and the turf is covered in due, most courses rough becomes tougher to play from. Today I'll show you the technique that will get you back into play and onto the short grass.
The first thing you must do is select a club with enough loft to dig the ball out. If in doubt, always select more loft, and the rule goes, that the longer the grass, the more lofted a club you must choose. At address position, play the ball in the centre of your stance and favour your left foot slightly with your weight. Now make a steep back swing by picking your arms up much more than normal, keeping your weight on the left side.
You must now swing steeply down on the ball with force (no delicacy required!). The steep downswing will prevent too much grass from getting between club head and ball. Attempting to scoop the ball out will cause the club to get tangled in the long grass, and will end in failure. This shot requires a combination of technique and brute force, and is a shot that not many players practice. By practicing this shot you will be ahead of the field.
Golf Course Improvements
Getting water onto the greens at North Inch Golf Course has always been a problem with only seven of our greens having automatic irrigation.
This has meant that the other 11 greens have been required to be watered by hand, which is a very ineffective and labour intensive task.
Last week we have had work done on our irrigation system and have 15 greens fitted with automatic irrigation, which will make a huge difference for the greens going forward.
Winter Season Ticket
Our Winter Season Ticket is now available and is proving very popular. You can play unlimited golf from now through until 31st March 2016 for the following prices
Adult £98 Senior (65+) £67
Young Adults (18-29yrs) £67
Concessions (Students & Unemployed) £67
Juniors £20
You will be hard pushed to find any better value golf than this and our Winter Ticket golf makes our great game affordable and accessible to everyone. As a Season Ticket Holder you will also have access to Free club hire, so you don't even have to own your own set of clubs to play at North Inch.
