A friendly place to practice, shop and talk golf

We are a friendly bunch at Noah's Ark Golf Centre, and so many of our clients see us not only as a place to come and practice or buy equipment, but as place to go, relax and talk golf.

Our team are all fanatical golfers and love to discuss everything golf, whether it be the latest equipment, what's been happening on Tour or something about your own game that you think we could help with.

With some of the best (and cheapest) freshly ground coffee in town, you can take a comfy seat in store and relax with friends. Please feel free to come along any time and use the range, browse the shop or just have a chat!

TaylorMade M1 coming soon!

I was lucky enough to get to hit the soon to be released TaylorMade M1 driver this week. This is an awesome golf club and is expected to be #1 on Tour this coming week. The look, feel, sound and most importantly performance was top notch. I can't wait to get this one in store and see how it performs for everyone else.

We will have a full range of fitting/demo drivers available for you to try in the next few weeks, before the official launch in early November.

Practice Plan - Draw your ball

To hit a Draw, your clubface must aim where you want ball to start, then you must make sure that you swing even more to the right than the face points, this will create the curve.

The best way to achieve the desired swing path is by aligning a bit to the right and moving the ball position slightly further back in your stance. The clubface controls initial direction that the ball travels and swing path creates the curve.

Take a few minutes to warm up, and then select 3 irons from your set. This plan is based upon a basket of 50 balls.

10 balls - Hit these balls with each of your irons, to complete your warm up.

- 30 balls - Broken down into 3 groups of 10 balls. Pick out an imaginary obstruction and try to manoeuvre your ball around it with the method I have explained. Alternate between your clubs and keep a note of how many balls you successfully curve around your obstruction. Remember that making the ball move right to left is not enough, it must start right of your obstruction and then draw back.

- 10 balls - Hit these balls with each of your irons, to warm down.

To get the most from your practice sessions, it is essential that they are properly structured, and that every single ball is accounted for and given 100% concentration. To improve your golf, you are going to have to put some time into your game.

A driving range membership allows you to hit balls every day of the week, for just £19.99 per month.

This is a great value way to work on your game and even when you are short of time, a quick range session will really help keep your game sharp.

Play Better Golf - Get through it

A common fault amongst golfers is to get stuck on the back foot through impact, resulting in both directional and ball striking issues. More often than not the problem arises from a sway off the ball on the backswing and the players struggling to get back to the ball.

Today I'll show you a great exercise that will help prevent your sway and encourage you to better rotate your body through impact.

Firstly, place the ball on a low tee and then whilst in address position lift your right heel a little off the ground and keep it there as you make your backswing. This positioning with the right foot will prevent you from swaying to the right and will encourage a more central pivot on the backswing.

From this position, you will now find it much easier to shift your weight and clear your body into impact. This movement will help you generate power, make better contact with the ball and will also ensure that your shots stay on the short grass due to a more passive clubface through impact.

This is a drill that's worth repeating each time you go to the range and is also a great warm up exercise before you play.

Junior golf

North Inch Junior Open

The North Inch Junior Open was held last Sunday, 13 September. The weather held out and it turned out a lovely day for golf.

There was some great scoring from the boys and girls, and a full list of results can be seen by clicking here.

Greens Hollow Coring

Despite some mechanical problems on Monday/Tuesday, our Green keeping team have done a great job, along with our volunteers in getting the greens hollow cored. The top dressing will be starting tomorrow with the over seeding being done early next week, followed by a second dressing.

Although this work causes some short term disruption, it will make a big difference to our greens going forwards. We now have a plan in place, which will see regular aeration and dressing works taking place from now on.

As I have explained to anyone who will listen, although the greens have vastly improved it will likely take 2-3 years before we get them where we want them. So far we are only 5.5 months into this period and the results are already showing.
