Play Better Golf - Control Your Ball Flight
When you play golf in Scotland, you're going to have to get used to playing in some 'indifferent' weather. Wind in particular, can really affect the flight of your ball in the air. As a result, it's really important that you learn how to control the trajectory of your golf ball so that you can deal with the conditions and make the best score possible.
The basic principles of ball flight are as follows. Wind against = Lower ball flight, Wind behind = Higher ball flight, No or little wind = standard ball flight.
Many players falsely believe that they must make big changes to their swing to either lower or heighten their ball flight, but this is not the case. Trajectory changes can be made with a simple change in ball position. To hit the ball with a lower trajectory, place the ball further back in the stance.
This will create a lower loft on the clubface which will help flight your ball lower. During your swing, have the feeling of staying over the ball throughout.
To hit the ball with a higher trajectory, move the ball forward in your stance. This will add loft to your clubface and will help the ball get up in the air. Have the feeling of very slightly leaning back at impact, but don't overdo this or you will catch the turf before the ball or thin it.
For a standard trajectory, place the ball just forward of centre and make your normal swing. This ball position will present the designed loft to the ball at impact and produce a standard flight. Before you go making big changes to your swing, some very simple alterations to your set up can make a big difference to your ball flight.
