The world is a small place!

We do a fair bit of re-furbishing of iron club heads in our workshop using a really useful belt grinder. Due to the amount of use, we have now worn out the contact wheel which sits behind the abrasive that grinds the club head.

Having tried to find a parts supplier in the UK, I discovered that there was not one and that my option would be to buy a new machine at several hundred pounds. Being the frugal Scotsman that I am, I put on my investigating head and decided to contact the manufacturer in Australia directly via their Facebook page. They confirmed that there wasn't a UK distributer, but said that it would be 'no problem' to ship the part direct from Australia to Perth. A quick Paypal payment of £40 and just 4 days later, the part arrived at Noah's Ark, now that's a great service. Saved me about £250 too!

We're having a really busy time with our custom club fitting at the moment. With the new season getting under way, there are lots of golfers treating themselves to new clubs. Below is a lovely set of the new PING i25 irons, which we fitted last Saturday for Bruce McCall. Our own Jonny Belford fitted Bruce on Saturday afternoon, the order was placed with PING Monday morning, clubs were built on Tuesday morning, shipped Tuesday afternoon and were delivered Wednesday, now that's a speedy service.

This week we have also been fitting PING G20 irons, TaylorMade SpeedBlade irons, Titleist AP2's and Callaway Apex and X Hot irons. We've been run off our feet, which is a great feeling following the winter off season! Long may it last!!

Fairway Woods

The fairway wood is about the most difficult club to hit with any consistency, but one that is very useful as we start the new season and courses are playing a bit longer. Being a good fairway wood player will help make those par 5's a little shorter and possibly give you a few more birdie chances.

At address you should slightly widen your stance, position the ball 2-4 inches inside your left heel (do not put the ball too far forward) with your weight evenly distributed. You are hitting a wood to gain yards on the course, so remember to make a full shoulder pivot on the backswing, making sure that you don't sway onto your right side otherwise you will struggle to get back to the ball at impact.

To hit a crisp well flighted fairway wood it is important that you catch the ball slightly on the downswing and that you follow through to a complete finish making sure that your weight ends up fully on your front foot.

If you hang back in an attempt to lift the ball in the air you will either hit the ground first or top the ball (sound familiar!). Be sure to make a positive committed swing and you should start to see results.

Gent's Roll up Coaching
