Master the Bunker Shot by Kevin McNiven

Arguably one of the hardest shots in golf, but why is it?

This is the only shot in golf where you are required not to hit the ball unless you are in a fairway bunker, so why is it so hard? Below there are 3 tips which are commonly overlooked when addressing and hitting the shot and that hopefully, you will find the one you are not currently doing.

Pic 1, Stance – Feet slightly narrower than shoulder-width apart. Leaning forward on your front foot (foot closest to target) weight distribution should be 70%-30% on the lead foot. Ball Position – the ball should be more in line with your Front foot than in the middle.

Pic 2, Impact – At impact make sure to accelerate through to the target deliberately hitting behind the golf ball. Think the bigger explosion you create under the ball the more likely it will get out.

Pic 3, Weight Transfer – Make sure you get all your weight through on your leading foot. DO NOT LEAN BACK!

If you lean back or don’t move your weight forward through your shot, you will shallow out your angle of attack and not get under the ball hitting a poor shot.

Give these simple but effective tips a try and see your bunker shots improve.

North Inch news

You can now book a golf lesson with T Woods at North Inch!

As some of you will already know, our very own Tom Woods was accepted onto the PGA training program back at the beginning of October this year with outlook to there being a golf professional based at the course full time to be able to offer lessons and coaching.

Tom has been working and training under Niall for the last two months in order to pass the first stage of his coaching exams and is now able to start offering coaching sessions at the North Inch!

He will be offering individual and shared lessons, to begin with, which you can book through his website (which is a work in progress!) and is looking to introduce more options for group coaching etc in the near future.

This will hopefully be of great benefit to the golf course going forward and we hope that Tom will be able to help you get the most out of your golf at the Inch!
