I spy with my dominant eye...
Eyesight is massively underrated whilst playing golf. Many golfer’s do not realise by not knowing which eye is dominant leads to a big complication’s causing misalignment. Approximately 80% of off-line shots are due to poor alignment (the difference between where the target is and where it appears to be). Your dominant eye is the one in which we are meant to use when aiming. The brain favours one eye when identifying your target. This is critical when trying to judge depth perception, so it becomes vitally important for short game and putting also. |
Below is a test you can do to see which eye is your dominant one. If someone is right-handed this does not necessarily mean their right eye is their dominant one. If you recreate the picture below, standing over a golf ball with your hands placed as in the picture, then close each eye one at a time. Whichever eye keeps the ball in the middle of your hands shows your dominant eye.
If you imagine choosing a target which appears to be straight ahead, but then use your dominant eye the target will now appear to be different. That’s why so many people do not realise they are aiming offline. It is worth practising this on the driving range before taking it onto the course as to build up your confidence. Players Distance Irons TaylorMade, Titleist make irons that fall into this category. P790, T200 respectively. The reason for these clubs is to offer the player a club with maximum forgiveness while still looking like a traditional “players club”. They have done this by maintaining a thin top line and making the club hollow. The P790’s look like they could be a blade from the back and are very pleasing on the eye! The T200’s are also lovely looking clubs, but they still have a slight cavity.
P790 Irons
TaylorMade recently brought out a new version of the P790 and on the surface not much has changed. But why should it! These have been TaylorMade's most popular iron the last couple of seasons for good reason.
As they are saying, you don’t mess with what works. There are no standout changes, instead, upgrades. The top line is slightly smaller, the SpeedFoam is better, and the face feels softer.
The biggest change made has been adding a tungsten weight to lower the Centre of Gravity to allow for a higher launching shot.

T200 Irons
The T200 irons are the replacement of the AP3’s. There are a few big changes between them as well. The new T200 features more Tungsten weighting that the previous model, as well as having a forged face.
Basically, this means it will fly higher and feel nicer. The tungsten weights have not only been positioned low in the head for higher launching shots as mentioned but have been moved to the heel and toe to help with off-centred strikes.
That accompanied with the new forged face helps increase the ball speed leading to a bit more distance too!
The P790 7iron is 30.5 degrees and the T200 7iron is 30 degrees. I currently play with the Cobra Forged MB which has a loft of 34. Over the next week, I will put the three 7 irons to the test and have a comparison next week. I’ll look at things like distance, dispersion, spin and height, as well as seeing how each club feels. I think there might be some differences!
