Stop coming over the top If you are one of the many slicers or chunkers of a ball out there, then todays tip will really help you. Coming over the top of the ball is one of the most common faults that I see in the golf swing but is something that is relatively easy to fix with the correct drill. It can sometimes be difficult for players to internally visualise a movement that they want to make in their swing. In this case, that would be the feeling of shallowing the club shaft on the downswing to prevent it getting out in front of the body. Very often a player can find improvement much more easily by having an external focus, which takes the mind away from trying to control exactly how the body is moving and instead focuses on an outcome. In this exercise, the players focus is simply to try and swing down on the inside of the headcover and not to strike it. From the top of the backswing, a player coming over the top, will have their club too far in front of them just before impact, meaning that their club will strike the headcover. Try hitting some balls, with the sole swing thought of trying to miss the headcover, which should be positioned just outside the line of the ball. For the headcover to be missed, your swing path will have to be much more form the inside than before. We often have to trick ourselves into making better swings, but the outcome can be significant.
