Play Better Golf Stop your hook forever… Today I will show you one of the best drills to cure your hooks and blocks. These shots are most commonly caused by getting under plane on the downswing, resulting in the hands either flipping the clubface left or blocking right. To fix these shots, we need to get you back on plane and with a couple of simple alignment sticks, we are going to do just that. To start, I want you to tape two alignment sticks together making one longer stick. Now take 2x range baskets turned upside down and place the alignment stick in one of the holes, or if preferred stick it directly into the turf, angled slightly backward. As you swing to waist high, you club should remain out in front of the alignment stick. If you swing back too flat, then your club will impact the stick Continue to the top of your swing, retaining the feeling of an upright backswing. As you swing down, I want you to consciously keep the club above the alignment stick, so that you don’t fall under plane. This will be tricky at first and you will likely keep clipping the sticks until you get used to things. When done correctly, you will have given your body the space required to clear out of the way at impact. As you strike the ball, feel that your club is swinging to the left of the target. This movement will prevent the clubface from flipping over and should produce a ball flight that starts slightly left of target, before fading back to the right. Very simply, if you hook the ball, then you must work on hitting fades, this will get your swing plane and clubface into a more neutral position.
