Play Better Golf Eye up your Putts If you find it difficult to start your putts on the intended line, then there is a strong chance that your eyes are out of position and a small tweak to your set up could make all the difference. Although much of a player’s putting set up can be individual, there are certain things that when done in a particular way, will see you hole many more putts. A player’s eye line in relation to the golf ball is one of these things, and it has a big effect on where the ball will start its roll. It is important that you set up with your eye line directly above the ball. By doing so, you will be looking directly down the line of your putt, making it much easier to line up your club head and to start the ball online. If you set up with your eyes inside the line of the ball, then you are effectively aiming your club head on a line that is parallel to the right of the hole and the tendency is to miss that side. Conversely, if you set up with your eyes beyond the line of the ball, then the tendency is to miss putts on the left side, as your eyes are not looking along the intended line of the putt. To check your eye line at address, simply hold a golf ball between your eyes and drop it when you are set up. When your eyes are lined correctly, the ball should land directly on top of the ball you have set up to. If it falls either side, then adjust your position and try again.
