Lob it up Unfortunately, our approach shots do not always land on the green… Sometimes when we miss, we are left with a straightforward chip shot, but all too often we end up being trapped behind a bunker or must play up to a raised green. When these situations arise, it’s time to reach for the lob wedge and take the aerial route! Firstly, address the ball with your weight favouring your lead foot 60:40 and the ball positioned opposite your front heel, which should be slightly fanned open. Keep your grip pressure light and your body aligned a little left of target with your clubface open to increase loft and bring the clubs bounce into play. The key to playing an effective lob shot is to slide the club under the ball, allowing the bounce to strike the turf and prevent the leading-edge digging in. You must keep your weight firmly on your front foot, resisting the temptation to lean back and scoop the ball into the air. The overall swing feel should be that of a more relaxed arm swing. The result of this action will be a ball that floats high in the air and lands softly. This shot does require a bit of practice but can really help get you out of trouble when you miss a green.
