Bounce your Pitches If you struggle with your chipping then read on, as today I’ll explain how the way that you are playing these shots could be the root of all your problems. The short clubs in our bag have something called bounce, which refers to how much lower the back edge of your clubs’ sole sits to the ground in relation the leading edge. This is measured in degrees. The purpose of bounce is to help prevent the leading edge of the club digging into the ground at impact and offers a margin for error when used correctly. Many players when struggling with their chipping will move the ball well back in their stance, to trap the ball. This makes the leading edge of your club like a knife edge and consistent ball contact very difficult. For standard chip shots, try playing the ball from centre stance or slightly forward. This will allow the bounce to work and you will find it easier to slide your clubhead under the ball. As your striking becomes more consistent, your confidence will build, and you should see a real improvement. Once you feel comfortable with playing the standard chip, then try moving the ball forward in your stance and play a mini flop shot. This is very useful when you must play over a bunker, or up to a raised green. You don’t have to make any change to you swing, but the forward ball position will add loft to your clubhead and produce a higher flighted chip.
