What loft should you be playing in your driver?

There have been many articles written over the past few years regarding the optimum driver loft that the average golfer should be using.

The consensus is that most golfers should be using a higher loft than they currently do. I agree in principal, but what has been missed from all of these articles, is that they are referring to “dynamic loft” or put (slightly) simpler “the loft on the club at point of impact”.

Now there are several factors that can influence dynamic loft (other than the actual loft of the club), from angle of attack, to shaft flex and as I will now explain, “where on the clubface the ball is struck”. Most players are unaware of the two curvatures on a driver face “bulge” and “roll”.

Bulge is a curvature from heel to toe and has an important purpose (I will discuss this at another time!) and roll which is a curvature from top to bottom of the face and has very little if any purpose.

With a modern 460cc driver head, there is a 6 degree variance in loft over the clubface due to “roll”, meaning that your 11 degree driver is only such exactly in the centre of the face, it has 14 degrees at the top of the face and 8 degrees at the very bottom of the face.

So, my question is, do you really know what loft of driver you are currently playing?

Hybrid bump & run

If you are looking at ways to save some shots around the greens, then read on! There are more shots wasted from around the green than anywhere else in golf. Too many players reach straight for a lofted wedge whenever they are at close range, but this can make it tricky to both judge distance and make consistent crisp ball contact.

Keeping the ball low to the ground whenever possible, will be your sure-fire way of improving your scores, but this can be improved even further…

Traditionally, the bump and run shot has been played with something like a 7 iron. This is still a great choice to play the shot, but today I wanted to show you another option.

The hybrid is an extremely versatile club, with its wider sole design and larger head. It is not limited to hitting full shots and can be very effective for playing chip shots. The wider sole and more club head mass helps it brush easily through the grass with much less chance of digging in.

To play the hybrid bump & run, firstly set up with a reasonably narrow stance, grip down the club and place the ball just forward of centre in your stance.

You should now rock your shoulders back and through as if you were playing a long putt. I would suggest using a hybrid with around 19 – 22 degrees loft as that will give just enough lift get the ball travelling.

New 6th tee almost ready for play

We have now started cutting the grass down to the playing level and are getting ever nearer to having the new 6th tee back in play.

Last week we gave the tee a final over seed and are hopeful to have you out giving it a go within the next 7 days.

The odd couple

Here’s a question for you…

What do a 42-year-old Texan and a 24-year-old Spaniard have in common?

The answer is they paired up to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last weekend - the PGA Tour's only team event.

Ryan Palmer and Jon Rahm stormed to a three-shot victory at TPC Louisiana in the Crescent State, scooping just over $1 million each in the process. Once the duo had found the top of the leaderboard after the second hole on Sunday, they never relinquished the lead on their way to a comfortable three-shot victory.

Palmer admitted he was surprised when Rahm accepted his offer to pair up, but both will no doubt be glad he did after Palmer claimed his fourth PGA Tour win and Rahm his third.

Molinari highlights slow play

Once again, the debate on slow play reared its ugly head over the weekend. Edoardo Molinari tweeted a list of timings after playing a five-and-a-half-hour round at the European Tour’s Trophee Hassan II event, making it clear he wasn't happy.

Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell was quick to dismiss Molinari’s clear frustration, saying he is ‘flogging a dead horse’, claiming players can’t get around any quicker. But what do you think?

Should the pros be leading by example in the hope that play quickens up at club level? Or should Molinari stop worrying about everyone else and focus on his own game?

From green to tee

Be honest, how much thought do you put into the golf ball that you play? Probably not as much you do your clubs but considering the ball is in play on every single shot, using any old thing that you find at the bottom of your bag could be leaving you paddling uphill.
