Practice with a plan As the new season is getting under way it is important that your practice time is used as efficiently as possible. Standing beating balls on the range with no purpose is not going to get you the best results. It is important when you practice, that you make every single ball count and do not simply stand and hit without a purpose. Below is a practice plan I want you to work on, where you will be transitioning between clubs through the bag. On the golf course, you never get the chance to hit balls with the same club one after another and today’s plan will help make your practice more realistic. Firstly take a few minutes to warm up, by stretching and making some practice swings without a ball. This practice plan is based upon a basket of 50 balls. - 5 balls – Using your wedge hit these balls towards a target to complete your warm up.
- Play 18 holes (Approx. 40 balls)
Imagine playing 18 holes on any chosen course. Play all the shots greater than 30yards, that you would have to play based on the result of your previous shot i.e. if you slice a drive to the right, then play the recovery shot you would have to play from where the ball would have landed, followed by your wedge shot into the green. To make this drill most effective, you must give complete focus to every shot, go through your pre-shot routine, and be very target orientated. - 5 balls – Using your wedge hit these balls towards a target to warm down.
This is a great session for helping you practice playing ‘Golf’ and not just the art of hitting a ball. |

Play Better Golf – with Niall McGill Don’t resist it, Twist it… Do you ever feel like your golf swing is restricted and that you’re struggling to make a full turn? If so, did you happen to watch Dustin Johnson win last week in Mexico? If you did, then you will understand that to hit the golf ball a long way like Dustin, requires plenty body twist. You are going to need a big hip rotation to allow your shoulders to fully turn on the backswing. From address position, you should concentrate on the feeling of twisting your body, allowing your right hip and shoulder to turn behind your body. By doing so, you will make a central rotation and will be able to make a more complete turn on your backswing. Your right leg will straighten a bit and your left knee will kick inwards and that is fine. It works well enough for Dustin and its absolutely fine for you too. In the recent past, there had been much emphasis put on resisting with the lower body to generate power on your backswing. This has led to a generation of golfers struggling to make a complete turn, as they don’t have the range of movement to fully rotate with this resistance. With a freer flowing rotation, you will soon be seeing your drives fly that wee bit further down the fairway. If you are interested in taking some coaching to help improve your game, then don’t hesitate, give us a call today on 01738 440678 or email info@noahsarkgolf.com |

Johnson secures lifetime status The first World Golf Championship of 2019 took place over the weekend and for those of you who haven't heard about WGC events before, these are arguably the biggest events outside of golf's four majors. Perhaps, then, it was no surprise to see two of golf's biggest names battle it out for top-spot over the four days, with Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy going blow-for-blow in Mexico as golf's other stars struggled to keep pace. The final result was a five-shot victory for the big-hitting American, thanks to five birdies during a blemish-free back-nine on Sunday afternoon. For McIlroy, it was a story of what could have been as the Northern Irishman mixed countless birdies with nine bogeys and a double-bogey across the week. This was Johnson’s 20th PGA Tour title and pushed him back up to number two in the World Rankings, within touching distance of Justin Rose at the summit. It was a week where DJ also joined illustrious company in becoming only the fifth man in the last 50 years to win 20 PGA Tour titles before turning the grand old age of 35. But can you name the other four? Here’s a clue: two of them were playing in the tournament at weekend. However, aside from claiming his sixth WGC title and third in Mexico, it meant Johnson will earn lifetime status on Tour as soon as he completes his 15th season. Not a bad weekend for the American and proof that hard work certainly pays off. P.s. The other four were of course Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Johnny Miller, and Tom Watson.

75 yards? Up-and-down for me... |
The majority of golfers know how far they hit their driver and irons with a full swing, but wedges require you to be a lot more accurate if you want to start shooting better scores. So, whilst it can be useful to know how far a full PW or LW goes, you'll benefit far more from dialling in your wedges so you can hit specific distances that you regularly find yourself with on the course. |
Give yourself options You'll notice that different swings with each wedge will result in yardages that overlap - see table above. This is important as it'll give you options when considering the conditions. For example, if you're facing a strong breeze, we'd suggest going up a club and utilising a shorter swing so the ball flies lower with less spin, helping it to penetrate through the wind. |
Dial in with Lynx We'd recommend having a wedge system of the same brand and model, so you remove any variables in feel and spin across wedges. One model that we love is Lynx's Prowler wedge. Its tour-inspired shape has been validated by multiple-time European Tour winner Nick Dougherty so you can be sure it looks great at address. With lofts available from 48 through to 60 degrees, we can accurately fit you for the perfect set-up for your game. |
