Welcome to another edition of our newsletter. In this week's read, we take a look at how J.B. Holmes endured the elements at the Genesis Open, consider how you can stay on top of your game throughout a day's play, and delve into some of the latest products to land in-store. Enjoy the read! |
The time is coming As I sit writing this week’s newsletter, I’m having a look at how many days it is until the 2019 Masters and am very happy to see that it’s only 50 days away! In my book, the Masters always marks the real start to the golf season, but many golf clubs are kicking off a good bit earlier. Several local clubs have their Opening Season match on 23rd March, which is only 31 days away. At last, we can all see the light at the end of the tunnel… We can also be thankful that the winter has been very good to us. Although there has been a fair bit of frost, it has been dry and its remarkable just how firm the golf courses are to walk over. I was having a walk over the North Inch earlier this week, which can be soggy during the winter and you would have thought it was in season. If we do not get hit by another ‘Beast from the East’ then all bodes well for the coming season. If you are thinking about getting your game sharpened up ahead of the new season, then this is the perfect time to get started. |
Improve your putting We have just taken delivery of the new Odyssey Stroke Lab putters this week. These really are lovely putters and are designed to help you create a more consistent stroke. I like them so much, I have just ordered myself a Stroke Lab Tuttle putter and can’t wait to get it out onto the course. If you would like to book a putter custom fitting session, then Click Here.
What type of putter should I use? This is the most common putter question we get asked and below I’m going to talk you through the different styles of putter and who they would suit. |
Toe Hang A toe hang putter will rotate most around the club shaft whilst being swung, meaning that the putter face will open and close more with this style of putter than any other. This putter will suit a player who has a stronger. More rounded arc to their stroke. Mid Hang This is the most traditional putter style and the PING Anser is the most famous mid hang putter. Every single putter manufacturer has copied this design over the years. Mid hang putters suit players with a slight arc to their stroke, that is not to strong. There is less club face rotation than with a toe hang putter. Face Balanced In recent years, face balanced putters have become increasingly more popular. This type of putter is designed to resist any rotation of the clubface during the stroke and will suit a player with a straight back, straight through stroke. What might go wrong if you use the wrong putter type? A straight arc player using a toe hang putter will tend to miss putts left. Conversely, a strong arc player using a face balanced putter will tend to miss right If you would like to find out what type of putting stroke you have and which putter would suit you best, then you can book your self in with one of our team and get yourself onto our state of the art SAM Putt Lab system, which will measure everything about your stroke and report on what would best suit you. Play Better Golf – with Niall McGill Turn through it Today’s exercise will help you rotate your body better through impact. Poor rotation through the hitting area causes your clubface aim to be very inconsistent and can make your shots spray all over the golf course. Firstly, set your ball on a low tee and make your address position. You should now swing back to around chest high, ensuring that you rotate your shoulders and arms together. At this point, I like my players to make a short pause although this is not necessary, I just find I get better results this way. From here I want you to swing through to chest high, making sure that you really fire your body, passing impact where your weight has shifted onto your left leg. If your body moves well through impact, then you should find that by the time your club reaches chest high on the follow through that your body is pointing at your target. This exercise will help keep your arms and body move together and create a more consistent clubface at impact. This exercise can be a tricky at first, but with a little practice will really help your game. If you are interested in taking some coaching to help improve your game, then don’t hesitate, give us a call today on 01738 440678 or email info@noahsarkgolf.com |

Holmes brings it home J.B. Holmes had to master the cold and windy weather whilst navigating 33-holes of golf on a treacherous Sunday to win the Genesis Open over the weekend. The tournament looked like it belonged to Ryder Cup star Justin Thomas after the American had built up a four-shot lead through 54-holes. Three bogeys in his first five holes soon wiped out Thomas’ advantage and let Holmes through to secure victory by a single shot - despite a brutal three-putt from inside four-feet at the 11th. Rory McIlroy was on form once again with a top-five finish, whilst Tiger Woods produced the shot of the day when he holed his bunker try at the 16th to rapturous applause. Holmes showed brilliant resilience to stay on top of his game and overcome the tricky conditions in California, something which we could all learn a thing or two from when the going gets tough. The mental side of the game might not be as glamorous as a textbook swing or new equipment, but is definitely just as important and shouldn't be overlooked if you want to lower your handicap in 2019. We all love new golf equipment – be it balls, clubs or shoes; there’s nothing like stepping out onto the course knowing that everything in your bag is in pristine condition. Except, for the majority of golfers, there’s always one thing which is often forgotten about... |
| How old are your grips? |
| Losing control during your swing? |
|
If you pulled a club out of your bag now, what state would your grips be in? You’ll probably notice that they’re at the very least losing some of the tackiness they once had or, in the worst cases, worn away so badly that they’re completely unrecognizable - a clear sign they need to be replaced. The benefits to getting your clubs regripped are huge, and they can even improve your performance. Take the ALIGN grips from Golf Pride; these have a raised edge on the back (red part of grip seen here) to perfect your hand placement every time. |
|
As you can see, we're currently running a promotion where you can get your 7-iron regripped for FREE; all you need to do is pop in-store and decide which of these grips you want to try out. |
