Play Better Golf – with Niall McGill Fairway Woods The fairway wood can be a difficult club to hit with consistency but is a very important club for the club level player, who will use it several times per round. Being a good fairway wood player, will help make the par 5’s a little shorter and possibly help set up a few more birdie chances. At address you should slightly widen your stance, position the ball a couple of inches inside your left heel (be careful not to put the ball too far forward) with your weight evenly distributed. You are hitting a wood to gain yards on the course, so remember to make a full shoulder pivot on the backswing, ensuring that you don’t sway onto your right side otherwise you will struggle to get back to the ball at impact. To hit a crisp well flighted fairway wood it is important that you catch the ball slightly on the downswing, and that you follow through to a complete finish making sure that your weight ends up fully on your front foot. If you hang back in an attempt to lift the ball in the air you will tend to either hit the ground first or top the ball as your swing ‘bottoms out’ early. Be sure to make a positive committed swing and you should start to see results.
