Play Better Golf – with Niall McGill Slice Fixer Would you like to get rid of your slice in the run up to the 2019 season? Well today I’ll show you a great exercise that will help straighten out your shots and maybe even have you hitting a few nice little draws. Players who slice are accustomed to the ball flying from left to right and as a result they tend to aim left to allow for the curve on their ball flight. Aiming left is very often the root route cause of the slice and as the curve increases, so does the aiming left, becoming a catch 22 situation. Making changes in the golf swing is often best done by working on opposites and I find the simplest way to cure a slice is to try to play a draw. Firstly, aim to the right of your target, around 10 yards for a mid-iron and play the ball from a little further back in your stance. Focus on making a good central turn with both your shoulders and hips. As you swing down towards impact, you will find that your club remains a little behind your body, which allows the ball to be struck slightly from the inside. Anyone who slices the ball will be accustomed to attacking the ball more from the outside and with a steeper angle and it will feel very strange when you first make the change. You can see by the two pictures, that this will create a very different approach to the ball, however with some practice you should start to see some much straighter golf shots.
