Play Better Golf, with Niall McGill, Kneesy does it How much should I flex my Knees? This is a question I am asked several times a week, the answer to which is key to making an effective golf swing. When you set up to the ball you should have a “slight” flex in your knees, so that your weight centres over the middle of your feet. This athletic position will give you both balance and the ability to turn your body without too much restriction. If you over flex your knees, this will cause your upper body to become too upright and will make your weight sit too far back on your heels. This will produce a flat swing plane and make it very difficult for you to retain balance throughout your swing without making adjustment and compensation. Conversely, if you do not bend your knees enough then you will have to compensate by tilting further from your waist which will create too much upper body angle resulting in a very steep swing angle. You will also tend to find that your weight is too far forwards towards your toes. It is well worth spending a wee bit of time practicing whilst standing side on to a mirror. This will give you the feel and visual feedback on how you are standing to the ball. |
