Play Better Golf, with Niall McGill Strike it Right Whenever you see a good player strike an iron shot, they make a distinctively solid noise produced by the correct ball to turf contact. They do this by striking the golf ball before the turf as the club head travels downward towards the low point of the swing arc. Many players mistake this with ‘trying’ to hit down on the golf ball and as a result end up making their downswing too steep, leading to a multitude of errors. The key to good ball striking is controlling the low point of your swing and not the actual angle of attack. The more you can move the low point of your swing arc to the target side of the golf ball then the more your golf ball will be struck BEFORE the club head reaches the ground. Controlling of the swings low point will naturally create the downward attack angle and crisp strike that we desire. Most club level players find this very difficult to do and are prone to either striking the turf before the ball or catching it thin as the clubhead starts to rise again. Very often one of the main causes of this is a ball position that is too far forward. This can make it very difficult, even for the very best players to make the correct ball contact. By simply moving the ball position slightly further back in your stance for each club, this will make it much easier for you to make the correct ball/turf contact at impact. |
