Ryder Cup Picks Thomas Bjorn has made his wild card picks and they are causing a bit of controversy! He has certainly gone with experience and already having 5 rookies on the team may have been his reasoning for this. Ian Poulter was almost guaranteed a place in the team and I fully believe he is worthy of a place. The way he can raise his game for this event and the passion that he brings are undeniable. Paul Casey has had another solid year and is currently the 16th best player in the world. Although he has not played in a Ryder Cup team for 10 years, most people seem quite happy with his selection. Now is where it starts to get more contentious. I am a massive Henrik Stenson fan and believe that he is such a great player, that he will bring stability and confidence to the team. His form of late has not been his best and he has been slipping down the rankings, but I would still have picked him. It’s the selection of Sergio Garcia that has attracted the most comments. Although he is a Ryder Cup legend, Sergio’s form this year has been pretty awful by his standards. He has an amazing team spirit and Ryder Cup and will certainly be able to lift spirits, but I think the jury is still out on this selection. I would have liked to have seen Russell Knox get a pick. He finished 2nd in Paris on the Ryder Cup course earlier this year and is a vastly experienced pro playing on the world’s largest stage. That being said, Thomas Bjorn had a very hard call to make. With 5 rookies already in the 8 automatic selections, he must have felt that he needed to bring some experience into the team. Having players on board who have not only played in but have won the Ryder Cup will be a massive inspiration to the rookie players. If it all works out well for Team Europe, then I am sure Thomas Bjorn will be getting congratulated on his inspired choices!
