Play Better Golf, with Niall McGill , Fancy a few extra yards off the tee? Not many people have ever answered no to this question and I am presuming you are not one of them! Following a week of watching the world’s best players boom their driver 300+ yards, let’s see if we can find you a few extra yards too! When hitting a driver, there are a couple of adjustments that you must make to your set up to increase your chances of maximising your distance off the tee. Firstly, widen your stance a little providing a more stable base, then place the ball forwards opposite your lead foot and make sure that your lead shoulder sits high with a straight lead arm. On your backswing concentrate on making a full shoulder turn and ensure that your head does not sway from the ball. To maximise your distance off the tee, you must focus on striking up on the ball and on making a complete follow though. This movement will launch the ball higher with reduced backspin making your ball carry further and run more on landing. When you follow through correctly you will find that your weight ends up fully on your lead foot with the sole of your trail shoe pointing away from the target and your club all the way round behind your head. Don’t be shy the give it a whack with the driver, even if you are a bit offline you will be hitting a shorter iron to the green and on average you will score better. If you are going to swing softly with a driver to hit straight, then you might as well hit a 3 wood! |
