Play Better Golf with Noah’s Ark Golf Centre Professional Niall McGill Don’t resist it, Twist it…
Do you ever feel like your golf swing is a bit restricted and that you’re struggling to make a full turn? Over the years, there has been a lot of emphasis put on how important it is to resist with your lower body whilst making your backswing. This has led to many golfers struggling to make a complete shoulder turn on the backswing as they don’t have enough flexibility to fully rotate their shoulders when they overly resist with their hips. Unless you’re a contortionist, you’re going to have to have a reasonable amount of hip rotation to allow your shoulders to fully turn on the backswing. When you swing back, you should concentrate on the feeling of twisting your body, allowing your right hip and shoulder to turn behind your body. By doing so, your hips and shoulders will make a more central rotation and you will be able to make a more complete turn on your backswing. This top of the backswing position will make it much easier for you to accelerate fully through the ball to a complete finish generating maximum club head speed. Go, give it a go. As Darth Vadar once said, ‘It is pointless to resist….’!
