Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, in this week’s mail we recap on The Players Championship from TPC Sawgrass, we ask what your go to club is, and Henrik Stenson offers some valuable advice in our video of the week. Enjoy the read! |
Isn’t everything so much better when the sun shines?! What a great little spell of weather we’ve been having, it just seems to make you want to get out and do stuff, so let’s make the most of it! Did you watch the players Championship at the weekend? It was a great win by Webb Simpson and he played some fantastic golf, but the story of the week was all about Tiger Woods. At one point he moved up to second place and was only 4 shots behind Simpson, before he lost his momentum and faltered in the final few holes. I don’t want to take away from Simpson as this was a great win, but I must admit that I had written Tiger off and had mentioned on several occasions that he should hang up his clubs for good. Now, I know that he has not yet won a tournament on his return but he is back to playing some really good golf and is swing the club great! I really hope he can go on and win again, as even over these past few weeks there has been so much more buzz around when he has been competing. |
Sawgrass has a ‘sting’ in its tail Last week the golfing world descended on Ponte Vedra, Florida for golf’s unofficial fifth major, The Players Championship. Played on the TPC Sawgrass stadium course, it boasts one of the most iconic holes in the golf, the infamous par three 17th hole. The field included a resurgent Tiger Woods and fans were in awe of his impressive ‘stinger’ off the tee. Tiger started slowly, but weekend rounds of 65 & 69 saw him climb the leaderboard to a tied 11th place. |

The eventual winner, Webb Simpson, had become a bit of a forgotten major champion with no win on tour for over 5 years. He had struggled with the ban of the anchored stroke he used for his belly putter. He finally settled on a longer handle that ran up the left side of his arm, and then Tim Clark gave him the missing link at The Players a year ago when Clark suggested he also use a claw grip. Simpson has been working his way back to the golf he expects to play and now ranks 5th in strokes gained putting and holed an unbelievable amount over the stadium course. If you would like to improve your putting or learn how to hit the ‘Tiger stinger’ then speak to a member of the team for a lesson. Contact me here. |

The Straight Left Arm This week’s swing tip is an old one, but something that is still very important and relevant in the modern golf swing. When you watch a top player, you will notice how straight their left arm is at address and for the vast majority how the arm remains straight on their backswing. There is the odd exception, including Jordan Speith, although he does start with it straight! Maintaining a straight left arm on the backswing helps create both power and accuracy by improving your body & arm connection and widening the arc of your swing. At address position your left arm should be comfortably straight without too much grip pressure. You should now turn your shoulders and arms in sync to the top of the backswing when you will reach a point that you cannot turn any more, this is your trigger to start the downswing. There are two main causes of your left arm bending on the backswing. (1) If you swing your arms quicker than your shoulders this will cause your left arm to fold and (2) if you continue to swing your arms after your shoulders stop turning, this will also cause your left arm to bend. Both moves will cause you to lose power and control. With a bit of practice, you will master this move and hopefully see your scores come tumbling down. |
