Play Better Golf with Noah’s Ark Golf Centre Professional Niall McGill- Perfect Pivot

Following on from last week, today I will talk about the backswing pivot when looking from side on, or down the line as we refer to it.

It is important that you rotate the shoulders around your spine angle and do not straighten up. This is very much a pivot movement and maintaining this posture throughout your backswing will allow you to make a precise clean strike on the golf ball.

When you reach the top of your backswing your spine should have remained in the same angle at the top of the backswing as it was at address.

A great feeling to have is one where you turn your left shoulder to a position where it is directly under your chin. It will feel as if the left shoulder is traveling more down than across. This feeling however, is often confused with one of moving your left shoulder over to your chin. This latter feeling tends to create a body sway and a straightening of the spine. When this occurs, it will be very difficult to return to the ball with any consistency.

Try practicing your pivot whilst standing side on to a mirror so that you can see how well your posture remains. You may find that your backswing feels a little restricted, but don’t worry this will not reduce your power.

Golf Lessons

We are happy to let all our Pitlochry Golfers know that our Professional Wallace Booth is now available for golf lessons at the club. Initially Wallace will have availability on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s and will be on hand to help you improve your game.

Wallace is an extremely experienced golf professional and an Ex Amateur World Champion golfer.

Whether you want to get rid of your slice or sharpen up on your short game, Wallace is all set to lend a helping hand.

Junior Golf

Great First Session

We had a great first session of junior coaching this week. With our young golfers getting out and playing on our 6-hole ‘Wee Course’.

There will be a break next Wednesday and then the sessions will run every Wednesday evening until Summer holidays.

We know all the stereotypes about golfers and clubs – but times have changed. Welcome to the modern game where you can play a few holes after work and grab a well-earned drink with your friends afterwards.

It’s not all older players, diamond jumpers and chequered shorts – golf is played by celebrities, sports personalities and Jimmy next door.

Why?

Because it’s a great way to relax and enjoy some you time, whilst taking in the fresh air and spectacular views.

Something a little bit different…

This week and last sees both sides of the pond doing their bit to drive golf forwards into the 21st century, with the aim of attracting a fresh crop of people to the game. Part of the reason the Ryder Cup makes for such fascinating viewing is that of the different formats played (foursomes, fourball betterball and singles matchplay) and the team ethos across the week.

Well, last week’s PGA Tour event had something similar where pairs played two rounds of foursomes and fourball betterball across the four days. A glance down the leaderboard will highlight plenty of potential Ryder Cup pairings, from Rose & Stenson to Garcia & Cabrera-Bello, as well as David Duval & Jim Furyk trying to rewind the years. At the end of the play, it was American duo Billy Horschel & Scott Piercy who finished top of the pile with a four-day total of 22-under-par.

Back to this side of the Atlantic where the second edition of GolfSixes hits the spotlight this weekend. There will be a number of firsts during this innovative event, none more so than when Thomas Bjorn & Catriona Matthews tee it up together to become the first male and female professionals to play together in a competitive matchplay format on the European Tour.

It's 14 clubs for a reason

This week marks the start of a series of articles where we focus on making sure that you are getting the very most out of the clubs in your bag. A key way to do this is to look at your set as one, rather than breaking it down into woods, irons and wedges.

What does your set look like?
As you know, we’re big advocates of custom fitting for golfers of all standards. Many of you have taken advantage of this and are now hitting the ball further and straighter than you ever have before.

While this is fantastic, if you’re hitting your woods further you may have been left with a fiddly gap to your longest iron; likewise, if your new irons are a club longer then you will inevitably have a gap after your PW.

Look at your clubs as a whole
It’s only by looking at your set as a whole that you’ll be able to spot and react to any gaps, meaning you’ll have a club for every shot you could face on the course.
