Pro's news

The Sun is shining

Let’s hope the weather forecast is correct and that we are about to enter a nice period of warmer and sunnier conditions. The grass is slowly starting to grow which is a sign that things are about to get a bit better.

We have had another busy week with lots going on at the golf centre, along with North Inch and Pitlochry.

Our SAM putt lab finally arrived yesterday, but realistically we are looking at mid to late May before we have our video room fully converted into the new Putting Studio. I am really looking forward to getting this done and to become home of Perthshire’s first dedicated Putting Lab, complete with the world’s leading putting custom fit and coaching system.

Looking for new irons?

Lots of golfers have been in looking for new irons and there are some great options available this season. Callaway Rogue has been particularly popular, with 3 head options available in the form of Rogue X, Rogue and Rogue Pro.

On the driver front, we have just taken delivery of the new Callaway XR Speed demo and fitting drivers ahead of the official launch in May. First impressions are that this is going to be another cracking driver from Callaway.

With 18 demonstration Vokey SM7 wedges available, we have seen a marked increase in the number of wedge fittings that we have been doing. There are many bounce and grind options available, along with loft selection. Depending upon your swing style and the course where you play the majority of your golf, it is really important to get fitted for the most suitable option.

Pitlochry Golf

A great first week

It was a great but challenging first week in our new Pitlochry store. As with all new jobs there is a steep learning curve when you first start, and this is no different with a new business. This has been the case at Pitlochry and we have learned a lot over the first 7 or 8 days. I believe that within another couple of weeks, we should be fully on top of things and can start operating at full throttle. Initial indications show that its going to be a very busy season and the club has a real resort feel about it. I am astonished every time I drive through the town, just how many tourists ae walking up and down the main street.

I am really pleased with our new Under Armour crested clothing which arrived last week and as for our new fleet of GPS enable Powakaddy electric trollies, they are just 1st class!

North Inch Golf Course

Not Quite Augusta, but looking great…

Following a generous grant from Dobbies to buy plants, we held a really productive volunteer day last Friday where we dug these all into a previously prepared area behind the first green. Although it looks fairly sparse at the moment, given a couple of years this should help to create some lovely framing around the green. We have a mixture of plants including locally grown rhododendrons.

Over the next few weeks, we are also looking to prepare an area to sow some wild flower. One the area is finalised, we will rotavate and prepare the tilth for sowing.

Wild flower will be a great addition to North Inch, helping further improve the surrounding presentation of the golf course.

Time to settle the debate

When it comes down to watching golf on TV there are two types of tournaments: birdie feasts where the winning score is double-digit under par and the level-par struggle where victory is secured with a 72-hole total somewhere around par.

Sometimes the world’s best tear apart the courses they’re playing – supposedly the hardest tests in golf – by booming drivers 320+ yards on every hole and leaving just a flick to the green. But there are also times when they seem almost human, scratching around in a desperate attempt to salvage a par like in The Open.

So, the question we’re asking is: which do you prefer to watch? Do you like to see birdie after birdie on TV or does the ability to grind out pars with the occasional birdie make for better viewing for you? Let us know by clicking on the link below.

Are you a V or X?

When it comes to golf balls, there are two questions we hear on an almost daily basis, both concerning Titleist’s Pro V1 and Pro V1x. So we thought we’d take this opportunity to let you all know the answers...

What’s the difference between V and X?
Both of the Pro V1 balls are designed to provide long and short game performance, but there are subtle differences from tee-to-green.

While both feel soft, the Pro V1 is a little softer and has a penetrating flight that delivers more roll from the tee, whereas the Pro V1x feels firmer and flies higher.

Which one should I play?
If it’s a straight shootout between the Pro V1 and Pro V1x, then you’re going to benefit from distance, control and feel either way.

Both models are used on tour by players such as Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, but it really comes down to your personal feel preference and which characteristics suit your game, which we can discuss during a ball fitting.
