What a week So, in the end it was Patrick Reed who put on the green jacket late on Sunday night. I have to say, he is not one of the most popular champions, with a chequered past including accusations of cheating and theft during his college days. When a player from Northern Ireland gets much larger cheers on the 1st tee than a player who attended Augusta state university, just down the road you know something is not right. Reed however, played some great golf and McIlroy never really put up a fight and faded away quite early on. There were a couple of charges however, most significantly by Jordan Spieth who was on fire at 9 under par for the first 16 holes of his final round. A missed birdie opportunity on 17th and a bogey up the last meant it just wasn’t to be this year for Spieth. Rickie Fowler signed off for a 67 and 14 under par and would ultimately finish second, just a single stroke behind Reed. Fowler’s day will come however, I am absolutely sure of that. He has been so close so many times, I’m going to continue backing him. All in all, it was another great event and has gotten everyone back into the golf frame of mind and this has been apparent with the increased footfall on the driving range and at both Pitlochry and North Inch golf courses. |
