Play Better Golf – with Niall McGill Make your practice swing count If you want to make a consistently good contact with the ball, then it’s time to start making the best use of your practice swing. Before I go any further and get hounded by the slow play brigade, I am only advocating a single practice swing which should be taken in a timely fashion! Too often I see players making completely aimless practice swings without purpose. These swings are made simply because the golfer has seen someone else do it and followed suit. The following advice is aimed at the average club golfer and is not so relevant for the more elite player. When making your practice swing, you should be trying to make some contact with the turf. Just enough, so that you get a feel for where the ground is. Too little turf contact and you will be prone to thinning the ball, too much turf contact and you’ll be prone to fatting the ball. Away from the golf course, as an exercise it is good to simply make swings without a ball and with the sole purpose of contacting a spot on the range mat or turf. This will really help your ball striking and consistency when you hit the course.
