It's rough out there... It’s Open Championship week and Royal Birkdale looks to be in fantastic condition. As always however, if the players miss the fairway and find themselves in the deep primary rough, it’s going to be tough for them to advance the ball an serious distance. The warm and wet weather that we have been experiencing is perfect conditions for the rough grass to flourish and you have most likely noticed some areas of your own course where it can be pretty difficult to recover from. Today I’m going to show you how to get the ball back into play when you find yourself in the really deep rough. Firstly take a lofted club, the longer the grass the more loft you will require. In situations like I have today, then reach for sand wedge. Set up with your feet quite wide apart and position the ball in the centre of your stance. Pick the club up steeply on your backswing and keep your chest over the top of the ball without transferring your weight to your back foot. Now hit down on the back of the ball with lots of force keeping your grip pressure firm to prevent the club head twisting. Your through swing will be severely restricted by the long grass, but your ball should hopefully be back in play on the short grass.
