How to play under pressure
Many golfers when under pressure or faced with a tough shot, will hold back and make an easy swing at the ball. They do this with the belief that an easy swing will be more likely to hit the ball on target. Unfortunately, the reality is more often the opposite.
I am over simplifying here, but essentially the golf swing is made up of a body turn and an arm swing. When a player eases off, it is usually their body that eases and not their arms. The arms, and the hands that are attached to end of them have the largest effect on where the club face points at impact and the clubface controls where the ball flies.
Therefore, the more 'armsy' a player's swing is, the more likely they are to hit offline.
If you watch a Tour player when they are under pressure or have a tough shot, you will see a very different strategy. Top players understand the arms and body relationship, so under pressure they will always fully commit with their body to the shot. A top player will often go down a club, so that they can be slightly more forceful and reduce hand action more.
Keep this thought in your mind. A passive body leads to active hands, whereas and active body leads to passive hands. Aim for the latter and you will do well.
