Summer is now officially here and here's hoping that it's going to be a good one, with lots of golf getting played. The US Open is just around the corner and this year's host course Erin Hills is looking tough. I was watching a video earlier this week on the severity of the rough and it looks really tough!!

Tiger has been back in the news this week for all the wrong reasons and things are really not looking great for the former world #1. Reports show that there was no alcohol in his system and he claims it was just a reaction to pain killers. Video footage has now been released of the night and he certainly looked very unsteady on his feet. Let's hope that it is just a one off reaction and that there are no greater prescription drug issues.

In this week's newsletter I'm going to show you how to stop thinning your iron shots, with a swing thought that will help you make a better ball to turf contact by controlling the low point of your swing.

We also have the result video from our 70 yard pitching challenge, which was great fun to make.

Finally, if you have not entered the Texas scramble that we are holding at North Inch on Sunday, 11 June, then there is still time. Entry forms are available from either Noah's Ark or the golf starters box at North Inch. At just £30 for a team of 4 players, it's a great value game of golf!

Coaching news

Stop thinning your iron shots

I see many players who are prone to thinning their iron shots, so I thought I would show you how to improve your ball striking and get rid of the thin.

Your irons are designed to be struck with a downward angle of attack, but too many players I see are trying to scoop the ball up into the air. In most ball sports, you must hit up on the ball to hit it high and this, I believe is where the false logic in golf comes from. If you are playing tennis you must play all shots with the same racquet, meaning that your swing angle must vary tremendously with each shot. In golf, we are allowed up to 14 clubs, each which has been designed to hit various distances. The method of delivering the club to the ball remains the same for most iron shots.

When hitting iron shots, you should swing to the top of your backswing, making sure that you stay very central and do not sway to the right. As you transition into downswing focus on really driving your body weight towards the target.

This movement will effectively move the low point of your swing towards your target allowing you to strike the ball on the down, before the club head reaches the ground.

When done correctly, you will find yourself fully unwound at the end of the follow through and may even find yourself overbalancing slightly towards your target and this is ok.

What I don't want to see is that you are falling backwards away from target when the swing is finished. This is an absolute no no!

The 70 yard challenge result

You can now watch the result of our 70 yard pitching Challenge. Click on the link below to watch the video and see how your pick got on. The competition was to guess which one of us would have the lowest combined miss yardage over the 6 pitches. To make things a little trickier, we hit 3 of the shots blindfolded!

The winner of the Under Armour polo shirt will be announced on our Facebook page later today.
