Fitting news

It's been a busy week of custom fitting at Noah's Ark. The team have been out helping golfers find some well fitted shiny new clubs as we head towards the new season.

We have some cracking clubs available for fitting, including Callaway's Epic Driver and TaylorMade M series woods and irons.

Whatever it is that you may be looking for, then please come and speak to one of our team and we can help talk you through the process and help you decide on what clubs may be best suited to your game.

If you would just like to give some new clubs a try initially, then we have lots of demonstration clubs available for you to hit on our driving range.

Just pop in any time for a chat.

Fitting day

We have fitting days organised with both Cobra and Callaway Golf. Cobra will be held on Tuesday, 7 March and Callaway Thursday, 9 March. Both events will run from 2-6pm and, we are offering you the chance to book a  FREE 30 minute fitting.

You can book your slot by either calling the golf centre on 01738 440678 or email info@noahsarkgolf.com

Improving your game

Flight Your Fairway Woods - by Fraser Cramb

''Why can't I flight my fairways like my hybrid or longer irons?''

This is a very common question we get asked and there are a few different ways to answer it.

The first thing to look at is the angle of attack into the golf ball. There are so many articles and instructional videos on this subject all telling you different things, some say you should hit up through the ball some say you should try and sweep the ball off the turf, and some say to hit down on the ball.

There are arguments for and against all of these techniques, in my opinion, the most important thing is giving yourself the best chance of striking the ball in the centre of the clubface. If you are hitting up on the way through the ball this is very difficult and you will most likely either take too much ground before impact or strike the ball low on the clubface and lose distance and height.

For this reason, I believe the best option is to hit slightly down on the ball, not as much as with your irons but still a slightly descending blow. I'm not saying take a big chunk of grass after the ball, if you can see a scuff mark after the ball and not before it that is ideal.

To do this, make sure your ball is positioned in the correct place - somewhere in between your longest iron and your driver is perfect. This will help create impact angles somewhere in between your irons and your driver.

The second thing to work on is making sure you turn through the swing towards the target and onto your lead leg as you would with an iron. If you find yourself leaning back on your right leg after the ball is struck you have not transferred your energy towards the target and you are not getting as much from your fairway woods as you could be due to hitting up through the ball.

The last thing to consider is whether you have the right club to suit your swing. Depending on club head speed, it is much easier for some players to flight fairway woods that others.

If you have a slower than average club head speed it is important to check that you are using a club with enough loft to launch the ball as well as making sure the shaft is the correct flex. If you think your woods may be the wrong set up for your swing, come and see us. We have a wide range of demo clubs that you can compare to your own and see if you are losing out due to playing the wrong club.

Counter Balance Putters - by Andrew McHardy

Some of you may know the theory behind counter balance putters and some may not so I thought I would try to elaborate.

Customers often say to me "I am struggling with my putter, I need one with a heavy head". For some people this may be the case but for the vast majority it is not. Their reasoning for wanting a heavier head is so their putter will do more of the work there for allowing their hands to be less active during their putting stroke.

This unfortunately has the opposite effect. The more weight there is on the bottom of a putter the lighter is makes the top feel. The whole point of "counter balance" is that it makes the putter feel more balanced through-out the whole club.

If you think for a second back to your child-hood days and imagine yourself sitting on a seesaw with someone of equal weight on the other end. If you were to move up and down, you would be able to do this smoothly with a nice rhythm. If the other person was to jump off and you had to create the same rhythm yourself, it becomes much more difficult. You will now have to compensate by pushing yourself up harder off the ground because your weight has nothing to balance against. When you add weight back to the opposite end you are now effectively counter balancing the seesaw.

If you now compare this to a putting stroke (your hands being the end with no one on the seesaw) your hands are doing all the work to try and keep the rhythm smooth. If this is the case with your own putter you may often find yourself with the scenario where you leave a putt short on one hole so you consciously try and hit the next one harder. With a correctly balanced putter you should be looking at the length of putt you have and try and feel the weight of shot you must produce rather than thinking about what changes in your stroke you must make.

More putters come counter balanced these days but your current putter can also be changed. I have often had customers looking at expensive putters hoping this will miraculously improve their putting when some-times a 30g, 50g, 75g or 100gram weight may make all the difference.
