3 Clubs - 9 Shots - By Fraser Cramb
There is no doubt about it, often, the quickest way to improve your scores is to cut out the bad shots around the green.
Today I am going to give you a few things that you can take to the course and hopefully cut out a few of those wayward shots from 100y and in.
Most players these days have a PW, GW and SW in the bag. If you don't have one of these don't worry, the rest if this article still applies to you.
If you take out any one of these clubs and imagine a clock face, swing back until your arms are pointing at 9 O'clock and hit the ball with your normal rhythm. Repeat this process with 10 O'clock and 11 O'clock. Remember, we are talking about arms here but the body should do a lot of the work!
Hit around 10 balls with each swing-length and take the average yardage of each length. Now you have 3 different shots you can play consistently because the rhythm and the actual movement is the same, the only thing changing is the length of swing.
Repeat this with all your wedges and you will have a selection of distances and trajectories to choose from the next time you are faced with one of those pins cut just over the bunker scenarios!
This process works differently for everyone. There may only be a need for two swing lengths with each club. This depends on how far you hit the ball and how committed you are to practicing the movement to maintain consistent distances.
In general, people that hit the ball longer will have bigger gaps in between clubs and thus bigger gaps between a half swing and a full swing. So, in some cases, the gap may not be big enough to justify having another distance in-between.

Realistic distances - by Andrew McHardy There are a lot of golfers who are unrealistic about the distances they consistently hit a golf ball. In the shop on a day to day basis we here all kinds of stories. Some golfers say they are hitting the ball consistently over 300 yards with a swing speed of 80mph (physically impossible).
I myself have often hit a golf ball over 400 yards, unfortunately this is when I have hit the ball off the golf course and down a main road!! This does not mean I hit the ball 400 yards that would be me being unrealistic.
Everyone will have a limit to how far they can potentially hit a golf ball this depends on technique, equipment but most influential is the swing speed.
When we do custom fitting's or a session to gauge a customer's distances it can sometimes be awkward to have to break the news to them that they do not hit it as far as they think they do. It is vital to be accurate and honest to yourself if you want to achieve your best results on the course.
Most golf courses have distance markers on each hole telling you how far you have to the middle or front of the green. There are also course guides and stroke savers available at most courses. The most popular these days tend to be laser and GPS devices. The technology is great these days but what use is it if you don't know the distance you hit the ball.
I often have reoccurring conversations with customer's which goes a little something like this…
Andrew- "
how far do you hit your 7 iron?"
Customer- "
I hit my 7 iron 150 yards"
Andrew- "
ok so how far would you hit your 5 iron?" Customer- "
well I hit my 7 iron 150 yards so I reckon my 6 iron would be around 160 yards so I would say I hit the 5 iron about 170 yards."
This isn't good enough to guess how far each club goes basing it on a 7-iron distance. Firstly, it's rare for someone to have the same gap between all their clubs even when they hit the shot well. Secondly you may be more confident with some clubs then others which means you might hit the ball further with that club making the gap narrower.
I often hear people say "why do you need distance devices for your home course". I would completely disagree and say the better golfer you are the more you should rely on distance devices. The reasoning for this is if you were to play your home course on 2 different days, what are the chances the weather conditions are the same for both days and the ground conditions are identical. One day a shot might take a small bounce then a huge kick the next day resulting in different results. Then you must take on board how you hit the shot, whether it was as well struck as the previous day. This can lead to you being 10, 20, and 30+ yards further away from where you were the previous day for your next shot. The better golfer you are the more accurate you have to be so suddenly these 10, 20 or 30 yards means you should be hitting a completely different club this time around.
