Custom fitting

Does Custom Fitting Make a Difference - by Andrew McHardy

As the start of the new season approaches many of you will be thinking of upgrading some or all off your golf clubs. Initially we will focus on your driver.

Over the past decade custom fitting has been on the rise, in fact 95% of all the clubs we sell are now fitted specifically to the individual golfer's swing characteristics. Despite this being the case there are still many golfers who think custom fitting will not make a difference to their golf swing.

Let me share a short story with you. I was walking down the driving bays on the range the other day and I noticed a golfer practising. He had in his hands a Nike driver along with a key which allowed him to change the weights in the head of the golf club. These weights are to help influence the ball flight being produced by the driver. I watched the gentleman for around 5 minutes. In that time he had hit approximately 10 golf balls. He had also subsequently changed the weights around in the head believe it or not 10 times.

For this man to see any influence based on the changes to the weights, were having on his shots, he would have to hit a lot more golf balls and a lot less changing of the weights. The moral of this story is go and get custom fitted properly so you can see what influence the changing of weights, lofts, shafts and grips etc. can have on the flight of the golf ball, along with the consistency of strike that can be achieved.

There are launch monitor machines such as Vector pro, Trackman and FlightScope which track the flight of the golf ball and sends the recorded data back to either a laptop, I pad or even an iPhone. This allows us to see clearly what effects the weights, shafts, lofts etc. are having on the final results of your golf shots.

It may be the case that the driver that you are currently using may be the best available to you at this time, but there may also be a chance that it is not. This can be a huge contributing factor to your scores.

Whether this results in you losing the 50p wager between friends or possibly even you have had to buy them lunch. It may even have a bigger impact and be costing you those few shots you can't seem to shake off your handicap. Remember there is always room for improvement.

Coming back to my main point we have recently received our demonstration clubs from Titleist and TaylorMade with more on the way from Cobra and PING and other manufacturers.

When you take into account the options of club heads, shafts, lofts, grips and so forth, the manufacturers have more than 100,000 different specifications available for each specific model. That being said the manufacturers do not want, let alone expect the golfer's to constantly change the settings of their own golf clubs. That is down to the professional and custom fitting technician to make sure you are using the most relevant and suitable equipment possible.

I have decided to talk about drivers specifically, but this article also applies to all your golf equipment, from golf clubs all the way down to what glove may suit you best and everything in between. If you haven't had a fitting before or for a while, maybe it will make more of an impact than some of you may think.

I know what you might be thinking, custom fitting applies to the more advanced golfer, but in my experience it can make as much of a difference to the high handicap golfer as well as the low handicap golfer.

Golf is all about small margins and these don't always have to cost a lot of money. If you would like some advice on what glove to use, or what spikes to have in your shoes or even what golf ball you should be using, please don't hesitate to pop into the shop.

"The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement" - Helmut Schmidt.

If you are interested in being custom fitted for some new clubs, then come and speak with Andrew, Fraser or Ross who are on hand to help.

Course news

We have hit the 300 member mark!

When we started the North Inch Golf Course transformation project 2 years ago, we were down to 175 members and numbers were on a downward spiral. Course conditions were poor and our golfers were deserting us in mass and things were looking pretty bleak.

Thankfully, through a massive team effort and lots and lots of hard work, the golf course conditions have improved beyond anyone's imagination and the result of this is that we have this week just signed our 300th member. That's an increase of 125 or 71%, which is absolutely amazing.

We still have a long way to go and have no intentions of resting on our laurels.

We are planning big things for 2017 and if you or someone you know are looking to join a new club this year, then please get in touch.
