What loft should I have on my driver?
We all swing the golf club in our own individual way and as a result it is important that we match our driver loft to our swing style.
In years gone by, if you were a low handicap player, then you would use either an 8.5 or 9.5 degree loft. Everyone else would use 10.5 or 12 degrees. The only bit of science behind this theory was that lower handicap players had higher club head speeds and this would produce more spin. The lower loft would help reduce the balls spin rate. Now, lower loft does reduce spin, but this would not be good for a low handicap player who de-lofts the club at impact. He is going to require more loft, not less!
With the advent of launch monitors like our FlightScope radar, we have been able to measure and record much information about what actually goes on at impact. The result of all this information, is that we have realised that handicap and golfing ability is not the best way to determine the driver loft that a player requires.
Individual swing style and impact data, give us accurate information that we can then use to help decide the best loft. As a result, we can often see higher handicap players with lower lofts and lower handicaps with higher lofts. It's all about the individual.
Below is a list of just some of the impact conditions that can affect the required loft:
Angle of attack
Club head speed
Dynamic loft
Strike pattern
Tee height
Swing path
Release pattern
Some or all of the above factors will influence the loft that you require, so the next time you are thinking of buying a new driver, make sure that you come and get properly fitted for it.
Our professional custom fitting team are on hand to help you find the most effective loft of driver to optimise your driving.

How to hold your putter
There is one club in the golf bag that requires to be gripped in a different way and that is the putter.
We hold the putter in a different way so that we can try to reduce any unwanted wrist action and rotation in the arms. Wrist and arm movement effects the club face aim and as such the direction that the ball will leave the putter face.
Before gripping the putter, let your arms hang in front of you, but twist your hands slightly, so that your palms face one another and your thumbs point straight out in front of you.
Now take your left hand and place the top left edge of the grip into the life line of your hand and close the palm flat against the left side of the grip. Your left thumb should lay left of centre.
You should now mirror the above action with your right hand, placing the palm of the hand flat against the right side of the grip, edge in the lifeline. Your right thumb should lay slightly right of centre.
You can link the hands together by letting your left forefinger lay over the fingers of your right hand or can simply let all your fingers wrap around the grip.
When done correctly, you will feel that your hands have very little control of the cub and this will allow your shoulders to make the swing.
Course repair works
We have some work taking place on the golf course starting Monday, 26 September.
During next week we will be filling in the two fairway bunkers on 15th hole which were washed out during last winter's flooding. These bunkers have washed out regularly over the years and have become very deep and no longer play as fairway bunkers. We believe that left as is, the bunkers will continue to wash out every winter and without the available budget to continually re-instate the bunkers, we have made the decision to fill them in and grass over.
We will also be installing some drainage into the side of the 5th fairway. Although this won't be able to stop the 5th fairway flooding when the river rises, it will allow the water to clear much quicker as soon as the river level drops. The 5th green was damaged last year due to how long the water lay on it and once these works are complete, we will be able to drain the water away from the green and reduce the effect of any flooding.
There should be minimal disruption to play, but please expect that there may be some short delays when you are playing holes 13, 14 and 15.
