What type of irons should I be using?
This is a question that I am asked on a regular basis. Many golfers are unsure as too what style of head design they should be playing and can find it a bit of a minefield when they are looking to purchase a new set of irons.
Irons are available in several different styles, from pure blades all the way up to the super forgiving deep cavity back irons.
From Blade to Super Game Improvement cavity back, there are many different iron head designs.
Many players will lean towards a head design that is just not quite forgiving enough for their level of play. They like the thin top line of the club head and they will justify their choice by convincing themselves that a smaller head profile will focus their attention more and will make them a better ball striker.
Unfortunately, this is simply not true…
A head design that is too slim for your ability will just make you hit bad shots, or at least not hit as many good shots as a more forgiving club head will produce.
Without going into the physics of club head design, I'll give you a brief rundown of what to expect from different head styles.
The Blade
- Lower ball flight
- Lower spin rate
- Easier to shape shots
- Easier to hit uncontrollably shaped shots!
The Cavity Back
- Higher Ball flight
- Higher Spin rate
- Straighter ball flight
- More acceptable shots from off centre hits
So…. If you strike the ball consistently out of the centre of the club head, you can choose to play any head style and your choice would be based on desired ball flight.
If like most golfers, you don't hit the ball right out the centre of the club face every time, the you need to have a real think about what head design will assist you to play to you potential.
When talking about iron head design I want you to keep the following thought in mind. To play your best golf, you should choose to use the biggest most forgiving club head design that you can stand to look down at!
By doing this, you will be buying yourself a more consistent iron game and lower scores. Forget the fact that Rory and Tiger use blades. You are neither a Rory nor a Tiger!

Where should I position my hands at address?
This is a common question we are asked during lessons and one that has a fairly simple answer, but not too many players are aware of.
In this week's video, I will talk about your hand position and how using various clubs might have an effect on this, or not…

Maintenance week
Barring a small delay at the start of the week, everything has gone pretty well this week with the greens maintenance works.
The greens have all been spiked and deep verti-cut with the Graden machine and we are now working on the tees.
We will be over seeding and top dressing on Thursday and Friday and will be working hard to get the dressing dragged in before the weekend.
It can always be frustrating as a golfer that we do this work when the greens are looking good, but this is a necessary evil to allow us to continue to improve the putting surfaces for next year and beyond.
We hope that you understand and will appreciate that all of this work is essential and that the longer term benefits will more than outweigh the short term disturbance.
If you have any questions about the works, then please don't hesitate to email me on nmcgill@pkc.gov.uk

Junior Open Result
The up and coming talent of Perth and Kinross golf descended on the North Inch last Sunday, 11 September for our Junior Open competition. As the penultimate event on the county's 'Race to Kingsbarns', there was much up for stakes as players were keen to confirm their place in the end of year finals event on the Fife coast.
The overall scratch prize was won by Aamar Saleem with a very solid 73 in what were pretty testing windy conditions.
The overall handicap prize was won by the very last person to walk off the golf course. Luke Volland from Muckart came in with a superb nett 62 off his handicap of 19 winning by a margin of 4 from Cameron Wallace and Daniel Bullen of Auchterarder.
A full list of results will be available on our website tomorrow.
