If you are going to buy some new golf equipment, then please make sure that you get properly custom fitted. There really is no reason not to get fitted, as it won't cost you a penny more to buy fitted clubs than it will off the shelf ones.
Below are 3 of the most common questions we are asked by clients when they are thinking about buying new clubs.
Q.
Why should I get fitted, my golf is not good enough for custom clubs? A.
Wrong! Custom clubs benefit everyone. We are all built differently and our swings are different too, it actually requires more skill to play with clubs that are ill suited to your game.
Q.
I'm tall, therefore I must need upright cubs. A.
Wrong! Well at least maybe! I am 6ft 2" and I use clubs that are 1 degree flat. I struggled for many years during my playing career back in the early 1990's with clubs that were too upright for me. It used to be that if you were over 6ft, then you would play 2 degree upright clubs. Unfortunately, I've got very long arms and a tendency to hook the ball. This combination on arm length and swing style means that my correct fitting is actually 1 degree flat.
This was a revelation to my golf!
Q.
I've got a fast swing, so I must need stiff shafts. A.
Maybe not! A fast swing tempo, does not necessarily mean a high club head speed. Many golfers think they have a club head speed that requires a stiff shaft, but not many players actually know what their club head speed is. There are several factors that will contribute to which shaft flex you should be using, but club head speed is by far and away the most influential.
Case study I completed a full bag fitting for a client earlier this week and I'm going to give you an overview of the fitting and the resultant fitting specification.
We'll call my client
Ross (as that's his name!).
The first stage of our fitting was to select the best suited iron head. After testing several different models, it was Callaway's Apex CF16's that proved the best performing model.
Ross has a fairly low ball flight, so the irons are to be fitted with True Tempers XP95 shaft, which has lower kick point to help get the ball up in the air. The clubs are 1 inch longer than standard which suited
Ross's height and they are to be 2 degrees upright lie angle.
Unlike my own bad shot which hooks left,
Ross tends to lose his shots to the right and the face plane tilt of the more upright lie angle will help to bring his shots back online.
Ross also has large hands, so we have gone with midsize grip thickness and to his detriment, he is a Dundee United fan, so we have gone with Tangerine and Black Multi Compound Grips.
We have gone for a set of 6-PW Plus Gap wedge in the Apex CF and have added in 56 and 60-degree Mac Daddy3 tour wedges to complete the iron set.
Due to the loft strength of modern irons, we are seeing a trend where players are replacing out most of the long irons with hybrids. Due to
Ross's lower ball flight, his longest iron is a 6, which was flying out 175 yards.
We have then gone with a Callaway XR OS Hybrid 25 degree, flying 187 yards and a 22 degree going 201 yards. We have gone with a Callaway XR 5 wood, which is traveling 225 yards and has a loft at impact of 14 degrees', so no need for a 3 wood.
To finish off the set we have a Callaway XR driver with 13.5 degrees, set to a draw. Once again due to
Ross's lower flight, the 13.5 degrees are producing a lovely trajectory on the ball.
We are now just awaiting delivery of the clubs and
Ross is looking forwards to getting his hands on is new toys!

The Oakmont Chip The rough at this week's US Open looks brutal! The famous Oakmont course has been set up to take no prisoners and we are going to see some high numbers getting posted when players make only small errors in judgement.
Today, I thought I'd show you how to play a pitch shot when your ball is buried deep in the thick stuff. This shot well requires a combination of good technique and confidence, today I'll show you the technique and with a little practice the confidence should come.
When addressing the ball, you should be careful not to press your club too much into the ground as this may disturb your ball making it move and result in a penalty shot. Your ball should be positioned just forward of centre, with your clubface slightly opened and your weight favouring the lead leg around 60:40.
You should now make a steep backswing, making sure that you keep your weight favouring your lead foot.
The long grass will cause your club head to slow at impact, so it is important that you make a firm and positive movement into the ball. It is very important that you swing through with conviction as any deceleration on your part will result in the ball being duffed a couple of yards from your feet.
You will find that the long grass curtails the length of your follow through, but don't be concerned by this. With a little practice you should start to master this shot.
Perth Artisan Open The 137th playing of this historic open competition will be on Saturday, 25 June at North Inch Golf Course. With tee off times from 7.30am to 3pm, this should be a great day of golf.
Due to the location of the Artisan clubhouse, there is a tradition of starting play from the second tee, so you will get to play the course with a little twist.
