Hello golfers,
We've been taking daily deliveries of new stock this week, which is always a sign that the new season is just around the corner. We are now fully stocked of PING, Callaway, TaylorMade and Titleist clubs and there is some great kit for this year.
There is going to be a real battle for the top selling driver spot this season with I see, three main contenders. PING's G series, Callaway XR16 and TaylorMade M2 I believe will be the fore runners and it would be too close to call on which will be the most successful. If you are looking for a new driver, then remember that we offer a full custom fitting service using the latest FlightScope launch monitor technology.
One thing to bear in mind if you are going to be looking for a new driver is what loft you actually require. Loft is extremely important when setting up your driver for optimal performance and if you read on below, I'll explain a little more about this.
Choosing the correct driver loft
There have been many articles written over the past few of years regarding the optimum driver loft that the average golfer should be using. The consensus is that most golfers should be using a higher loft than they currently do. I agree in principal, but what has been missed from all of these articles, is that they are referring to "dynamic loft" or put (slightly) simpler "the loft on the club at point of impact".
Now there are several factors that can influence dynamic loft (other than the actual loft of the club), from angle of attack, to shaft flex and as I will now explain, "where on the clubface the ball is struck". Most players are unaware of the two curvatures on a driver face "bulge" and "roll".
Bulge is a curvature from heel to toe and has an important purpose (I will discuss this at another time!), and roll which is a curvature from top to bottom of the face and has very little if any purpose. With a modern 460cc driver head, there is a 6 degree variance in loft over the clubface due to "roll", meaning that your 11 degree driver is only such exactly in the centre of the face, it has 14 degrees at the top of the face and 8 degrees at the very bottom of the face.
So my question is, do you really know what loft of driver you are currently playing?

Play Better Golf - Get through it
A common early season fault that I see amongst players, is where they is to get stuck on the back foot through impact, resulting in both directional and ball striking issues.
More often than not the problem arises from a sway off the ball on the backswing and the player then struggling to get back to the ball. Today I'll show you a great drill that will help prevent your sway and encourage you to better rotate your body
through impact.
Firstly, address the ball and then lift your right heel a little off the ground whilst keeping your weight evenly distributed between your feet. As you swing to the top of your backswing you should keep your right heel raised and this positioning will prevent you from swaying to the right and will encourage a more central pivot on the backswing. From this position you should find it much easier to shift your weight forward and clear your body into impact and through to a full and complete finish.
This drill will help you generate power, make better contact with the ball and will ensure that your shots stay on the short grass. This is worth repeating each time you go to the range and is also a great warm up exercise before you play.
