Hello golfers,
Does lie angle really matter in my irons?
Yes it does!
Lie angle is one of the most important aspects of custom club fitting a set of irons and has a considerable influence on the direction that your golf ball travels. Through technologies such as our FlightScope ball tracking radar, we now know that it's the clubface rather than the swing direction that has the biggest influence on the initial direction that the golf ball travels when it leaves the club face.
How does that relate to the lie angle of my irons?
I'm going to try not to get too techy now, but it's to do with something called 'face pane tilt'. When you take a flat surface (clubface), that has some degree of loft (all golf clubs) and then tilt that flat surface 'toe high' or 'toe down' this changes the direction the clubface points. A toe high club head will send your golf ball left and a toe down club head will send your ball to the right.
The simplest way to explain face plane tilt would be to talk about what happens when you play the golf ball from above or below your feet. When the ball is above your feet, your ball will fly to the left and a ball that's below your feet will cause it to fly to the right.
To put this into perspective, a clubface that point 1 degree left or right on a shot that carries 170 yards, will send the golf ball around 3.5 yards offline. This means that a clubface that points just 3 degrees offline can send the ball over 10 yards offline!! Now do you believe that lie angle is important?

The Shot Shaping Challenge
This week, we thought we would see how good we all were at shaping our golf shots. Now I can normally shape my ball flight every time, the problem is that it's usually in the wrong direction!
The challenge this week was to see by how many yards we could curve the ball off centre with a driver. One hook and one slice.
When hitting the hook, the ball had to start its flight straight or right of target and the slice must start straight of left of target before it started curving. A break of this rule meant disqualification.
This was great fun to record and the video taster video will be up on our facebook page shortly. You can visit our facebook page by clicking here.
Your challenge is to guess how many yards apart the two shots landed. i.e. If the hook landed 20 yards left and the slice 20 yards right then your guess would be 40 yards.
To enter this week's competition, just head over to our facebook page by clicking here. And watch the video when it gets posted.
Play Better Golf - Centred Pivot
Golf is a difficult enough game without moving parts of your body is inefficient ways. Golf is a game where LESS really is MORE. The LESS moving parts in our golf swing then the MORE consistency we will have.
The modern golf swing requires very little weight transfer to the trail foot on the backswing, and instead we must remain much more central than previously believed.
At address, make sure that your weight is evenly distributed between your feet, with your chest above the ball. When you swing back, focus on pivoting your shoulders around your spine angle. When done correctly, your head will remain still with almost no movement to your trail side. You may have the feeling of your left shoulder going more downward than across as you move the club away from the ball. This is the result of an effective pivot.
You can practice this movement whilst standing face on to a mirror so that you can measure how central your head remains. Your top of the backswing position will feel a bit short and restricted when correctly pivoted, as there will be more coil and less unnecessary movement. Be careful not to fall into the trap of swaying off the ball in an effort to make a big shoulder turn. This movement is ineffective and will lose you both power and accuracy.
