Well Bubba did it again!
It turned out to be quite a comfortable win in the end for the long hitting left hander. Bubba however is not just a long hitter, he has a fantastic short game and has a vision and ability to hit shots that no other golfer could ever hit. He is one of a kind and just goes to show that the only position in the golf swing that really maters is impact. Whether your backswing is upright or flat, as long as you can get the club back to impact with repeatability, then that's the most important thing.
Golf is a game of ‘feel versus real’ and on a daily basis I’m confronted with players of all levels who ‘feel’ they are doing one thing, but in reality are doing something completely different. With the fairly recent discovery of D plane and the new ball flight laws, it can sometimes be difficult for golfers to clear their heads of our previous beliefs. The biggest of these discoveries is that we now understand that the swing path does not have much influence on the initial direction of the golf balls flight and instead it’s actually the clubface that influences this the most. In simple terms, this means that an ‘in to out’ swing does not necessarily make the ball start to the right of target, and an ‘out to in’ swing to the left.
Below is Flightscope data from a lesson I took earlier this week with Brian Bunch. Brian was pulling the ball to the left and had falsely believed this was caused by an out to in swing. To fix this Brian had been trying to hit from the inside and then release the clubface at the ball. As you can see below, Brian’s pulls were actually being caused by his clubface being closed to target and not by an out to in swing path. So Brian trying release his clubface at the ball in an attempt to draw the ball, was actually causing his pulls, along with a ball position that was too far forward.
Above you can see Brian's pulled ball flight. You can also see however that his swing path was from the inside by 4.9 degrees, but his club face was 12.3 degrees to the left of that path, which is actually what caused the ball to start left of target.
Brian's inside path and closed clubface.
To fix Brian's pull, we moved his ball position a wee bit further back in his stance and worked on his body drive through impact.
It was this body drive that fixed his closed clubface and stopped his pull. Brian's swing path has not really changed at 4.4 degrees from the inside, but his clubface is now only 2.8 degrees left of the path which has created a soft draw. Flightscope golf lessons
I'm a big lover of technology as most of you will be aware, but even after 3 years of using my Flightscope Doppler radar on a daily basis, I'm still amazed at what it can do. I'm pretty confident that over the past few years using Flightscope and our V1 video system, I have made more rapid improvements to my students games than at any other time in my 23 years as a golf professional. If you have never experienced the power of Flightscope and V1, then I would really recommend that you do so, as it could be a game changing experience for your golf.
